Match Report: St.Ives Ladies firsts played Long Sutton this weekend in a match rearranged due to the snow. With the visitors close to the bottom of the table, St.Ives knew they had to take three points to keep them in contention, two places off top of the table.
Although St.Ives started with possession, they were taken by surprise and Long Sutton took a very early lead. With only 15 seconds of the 70 minutes gone St. Ives still had time to turn the game around!
Unable to find their stride, St.Ives made it hard work from themselves. With Long Sutton continuing to break down St.Ives play and threatening down the right, it was a welcome relief when Lexi Palmer, supported by Helen Clarke, drove her shot home from a straight strike at a penalty corner.
The second half saw St.Ives regain some rhythm and looked the better side, however, despite a run of short corners, Ives were unable to turn pressure into goals. The second period of the game saw a more organized and disciplined St.Ives team playing basic hockey. Strong tackles, meeting the ball and linking up well with each other. With ten minutes to go, the teams still sharing the points, it took a smooth passage of play with a through ball from Clarke to Katie Etchells, who neatly moved the ball inside her player for the storming Lou Smith to run on to. Unperturbed by the pressure, Smith wound up and released a trademark ‘rocket’ shot which whistled past the keeper into the back netting.
The mid field, dominated by Juliet Moynan and Michelle Read kept the visitors at bay, with Emma King and Palmer solid up in defence. Not pretty hockey but 3 points none the less. Next weekend sees Ives play another rearranged match, this time over at Cambridge City. Ives will be looking for another 3 points to keep the pressure on at the top of the table.
