Match Report: St Ives travelled to March and were looking to put breathing distance between themselves and their opponents in this mid-table encounter which could prove vital at the end of the season.
The opening exchanges saw St Ives looking the much brighter side almost seemingly attacking at will. Mike Jenner marauding down the wing looked dangerous but could not supply the quality ammunition needed for the forward line. Chances came and went without being converted with Ashley Brown rattling the side board and Kevin Gilder doing likewise from a penalty corner.
The game started to even out as March finally got up to the speed of the match and created chances themselves before a penalty corner was converted by Gilder with a finish from close range. Keeper Simon Johnson was increasingly being called upon to keep the lead when he was left flat footed by going the wrong way to a miss hit shot which crept into the corner of the goal to give parity to the tie at the break.
The second half was a much more scrambled affair with both sides looking ragged at times with the midfield becoming mere spectators as the play bypassed them.
Another penalty corner resulted in Gilder again netting from a slipped ball, but not without a talking point. The ball appeared to be kept out by a defenders foot, but it finally crossed the line at which point the umpire looked confused as to whether to give a penalty flick or allow the goal, with what seemed an age passing before the umpire finally allowing the goal to stand.
Battling performances from the midfield quartet of Pete Brennan, Alfie Brennan, James Aubrey and Pat Cooney helped keep the remainder of the match short of any real chances for the home side. However, in the last minute March had a penalty corner shot crash off the post to be swept away smartly by Johnson to safety.
The 2’s now face top of the table Spalding at home on Saturday looking to maintain their winning streak.
