Ladies 1 vs Cambridge City 4

St Ives Ladies 1s kicked off their 22-23 season with a 1-1 draw against Cambridge City 4s.

A competitive first half from the start saw attacks on goal at both ends. The forward line of Olivia Watson, Naomi Chalkley and Nicola Dawes worked the ball around the City defence and St Ives were awarded a series of short corners. They were able to find the back of the net thanks to a strike from Abby Scarrow. Ives did not let off but neither did Cambridge City. However, with Megan Slack and captain Jules Griffiths holding the middle, it was going to be tough for City to get through. Ives were 1-0 up at half time and knew this game was theirs for the taking. Ives showed in the second half that they were keen to keep their lead. The visitors upped the pressure but Ives kept their cool and some solid defending from Alice Fryer, Claire Young, Tara McCarter and goalkeeper Chloe Fegan-Webb meant that City could not equalise. Ives worked hard to regain and keep possession and midfielders Maddie Jones and Emily Drinkwater were moving the ball well down the line to the forward line so they could pile the pressure back on to City. City had a spell of short corners and despite some fantastic saves from Fegan-Webb, they eventually found the back of the net. With only 5 minutes left of the game, Ives had a sudden burst of energy and threatened the City defence but unfortunately just couldn't get a winner.

A great opening game for the Ladies 1s with joint players of the match going to Fryer, Jones and Griffiths.
