Mens 1 vs Cambridge City 3

St Ives beat lacklustre City

St Ives faced bottom of the league side Cambs City 3s at home looking to avoid any slip up and continue their recent run of good form. When the opposition appeared with just 11 players and a very different line up to the reverse fixture, it became clear that the challenge for Ives would be to maintain their standards and play their game against the limited opposition.

It took 14 minutes for the first goal to and it came from an unlikely source. Captain Alex Prestage stepped through from centre back to intercept before releasing Andy Smith who in turn found Rory Mooney in the D for a simple 2 on 1 with the keeper that left Alex Prestage with a tap in.

A swift counter-attack after a City penalty corner went badly wrong left Adam Stefanelli-Wilson to find a charging Alec Bryden at the back post for another simple finish. Alec Bryden got his second and the team's third after staying composed in the D after dogged work from the forward unit. City did manage to get a goal back from a penalty corner but had very few other chances.

Normal service resumed in the second half with 3 more goals from the Ives front line. First Adam Stefanelli-Wilson slotted home, then James Harris capped a fine performance with a close range finish before Pete Liddle completed the scoring with a follow up that just about made it over the goal line.

Man of the match went to James Harris for his all round performance and deserved goal.

Ives now sit third in the table just 1 point behind the top 2 teams, who both dropped points at the weekend. Next up Ives face a tricky game away vs Cambs South.
