This week St Ives 4s came up against top of the league Cambridge City 5s. With them having won at least as many games as we have lost, it was always going to be tough.
The game started extremely tense with lots of early pressure in our D but thanks to incredible saves from Alex we kept ourselves safe for a while…
St Ives countered with some flashes of brilliant team play between Jack B, Rob and Tom in the mid field but nothing that resembled a chance. We soldiered on with more great passing play between John, Rob and Jack M but still the score remained 0-0 thanks to Alex saving everything and even sending balls over the fence! Eventually our defence cracked and all of a sudden 5 goals were put past us in reasonably quick succession.
The second half began and we came back giving it everything to try a get a shot off. In the first play of the half Jack almost succeeded, after some amazing team play between Tom, Rob, Josh and Jack. After narrowly avoiding conceding Cambridge retaliated with another goal and forcing the play in our half.
Eventually we forced our way back up and got a short corner that was deflected wide after an amazing shot from Tom. Shortly after though Tom got his redemption, thanks to Jack B, who shelled it into the back post where Tom was patently waiting to deflect it in and past the keeper. More like this please!!
With morale replenished, St Ives battled it out till the end to leave the damage at 6-1.
Overall, St Ives played stronger in the second half, better ball pace and passing creating some space against a tiring 11 man Cambridge. It was always going to be tough and the atrocious weather didn’t make it any more enjoyable!
