After several weeks of coming away victorious, St Ives were well stocked to face Kettering 4s. With a squad including 3…yes 3 (remember those start of season away games with a bare 11!) subs and support/guidance/shouting from the sidelines from the delicately calfed Barry Wickson.
It was a nervous start for our ‘ball magnet’ Micheal, as before the game started we had to give away an ice pack to another team. Fingers crossed for a bump free game…although not for Micheal as his fingers still hurt from last weeks injuries!
St Ives welcomed Mat to the team, with his unique hold of a hockey stick leaving the opposition with no idea where he was going, and started slow but quickly got up to pace with the team. We quickly slotted one in thanks to Tom.
We then started to get into a groove and began to pull away with a wonderful team play down the left hand side between Owen, Jack and Aaron who worked together to flick it over the keeper.
Kettering then proceeded to score a controversial goal after lots of backing in inside the D that left us all bewildered but we quickly punished them thanks to Rob who whipped it into the bottom corner.
At half time 3-1 up spirits were high and we held strong and managed to score a superb goal thanks to Tom again. We battled it out all the way to the end with multiple chances by Aaron but he couldn’t quite get it in the back of the goal.
Overall a solid performance and beginning to climb from the bottom of the league. Hoping for a winners banquet…we went to have our burnt sausage rolls, Seve discovering that it was possible to both burn the outside and have a undercooked inside.
